“Masquerade in the Underground” is an immersive album and multi-media experience that puts you, the listener, at the epicenter of a dark fairy-tale in the form of a rock odyssey.
In faerie folklore over hundreds of years, magical stories and cautionary tales have been told and passed down from generation to generation about the mercurial Fae spiriting humans away into the realm of Faerie - in some cases, never to return. Rock artist Raven Quinn weaves just such a tale on her forthcoming concept album “Masquerade in the Underground”. The narrative is expressed through a mixture of brand new original music, specifically selected cover songs, and spoken storytelling, but with an unusual twist: rather than being told from the traditional human point of view, the story-line of “Masquerade in the Underground” is revealed from the perspective of an ancient faerie queen with a penchant for admiring (and ultimately collecting) “Othered” humans for her eternal Masquerade Ball.
“Masquerade in the Underground” marks the return of Quinn’s longtime collaborator, Juno award winning and Grammy nominated producer, engineer, and song-writer Dan Brodbeck (Dolores O’Riordan, The Cranberries) for their most ambitious musical partnership yet. Quinn says the creative approach to realizing such a sprawling concept was, “to imagine this album as if it were a carefully compiled film soundtrack. Each song, whether it be a new original or a cover, was either specifically written or thoughtfully selected to express a chapter in the story that has been playing out in my head for years.”
As the listener, you’ll experience the album as if the Queen’s gaze has fallen upon you. Her fascination is palpable and the hypnotic pull into her nighttime world is difficult to withstand.
Each track from the album will be released “episodically” on a monthly basis throughout 2025, with the full album concluding in the Fall/Winter. The album rollout began February 18, 2025 with the release of the first single "It's No Good" (a blistering re-imagining of the Depeche Mode classic) along with the haunting spoken word album intro "Origins", which lays the foundation of the album's story-line and puts the listener face to face with the album's faerie queen narrator.
Several music videos will accompany the record - two of which have already been released (“It’s No Good” and an official performance/lyric video for “Masquerade”) along with a recently-launched Patreon site. Quinn’s Patreon community is home to a steady stream of additional exclusive content (from behind the scenes photos and videos to hand-drawn artwork, merchandise, contests, and more) as well as album-specific live-streams. Quinn has also recently begun uploading a collection of fictional “journal entries” (chapters in a forthcoming novel which coincides with the album) - which offer the opposing perspective of a human character called Andrew, with whom the Queen has her most defining and intense relationship. These chapters will be compiled into a full length book that will accompany the conclusion of the album.
So prepare for your forthcoming journey into the Underground. The doors of the Masquerade have opened themselves to you…
